OPEN CALL: FPN Island Residency

Deadline: Passed

Residency Dates: September 11-18, 2023
Location: Artscape Gibraltar Point, Toronto Islands, Ontario

Programmed by Feminist Photography Network

Overview: FPN Island is a one-week immersion residency on Toronto Island’s Artscape Gibraltar Point led by the guiding principles of valuing  intergenerational and intersectional identities. This experience will advance participants’ practices and develop skills through mentorship, network building, and knowledge sharing. Thematic workshops (e.g. Approaching Public Art, Exploring Toronto Islands and Creating Collectives) will be provided alongside time dedicated to independent practice. All participants will live on-site, and we will cook communal dinners together where ingredients will be provided by Feminist Photography Network (breakfast and lunch will be the responsibility of the participant). Without the pressure of an end product, this residency focuses on the value of process, rather than outcomes, and advancing one’s practice through shared learning experiences.

Artscape Gibraltar Point is a low-barrier venue with ramps into the building and large restroom stalls with handles on site. However, the site is located on a car-free island and a 35 min walk from the ferry terminal which could present accessibility challenges. Transportation for participants will be provided from the ferry dock to the centre at the start and end of the residency.

Who should apply: FPN Island is open to women (cis and trans), two-spirit, and non-binary lens-based artists living in Canada. Participants must not be enrolled in a post-secondary institution. Four fellowships are available offering a free live/work space and a $500 honourarium.  Successful applicants not selected for the fellowships above will be required to pay $550 (due August 1st) to cover the cost of a private sleeping quarter, with shared studio and bathroom. (Applicants have the option to only be considered for a free placement, not a paid spot, within the submission form.) The jury will select 12 artists for this residency.

Four fellowships are available offering a free live/work space and a $500 honourarium. Applicants may apply to multiple categories if they meet the criteria.
